Flutter Tunnel

Flutter Tunnel Renderings

Picture
Flutter Tunnel will be plotted either by extending measurement perpendicular to a base line, or plotting the curve of the sculpture, and then radially arranging  the arches off of the line. The radially arranged will squeeze off the enterances to the space, but will also create dynamic shifting geometrics throughout the installation. A perpendicular plot, depicted below, will enable Flutter Tunnel to be actived by participants, sending pulse ripples down the entire length of the tunnel.
Flutter Tunnel is generated by three distinct curves, creating a gently undulating sculptural space. Standing in the middle, a viewer will be unable to see the beginning or end of the space.

Sucker Rod

Picture
Sucker rod is a technical term describing a steel rod with couplings on each end used in oil drilling. Picture the oil pumps that slowly churn up and down. Sucker rod is what is getting pushed up and down the well. On the bottom is essentially a one-way valve that plunges down, and pulls up oil. The material is decomissioned after a specified length of time due to wear on the rods as they rub against a sheathing pipe. A cross section of a worn our sucker rod will not be round, rather flattened on one side due to rubbing day in and day out as oil is pumped up for you!

Sucker rod comes in 3/4", 7/8" and 1" diameters and in lengths of 25' to 30'. Thousands of feet are coupled together to extract oil from the depths of the earth.

Traditionally, decommissioned sucker rod is purchased by agricultural fencing suppliers, as the rod is a cheap and effective material to construct steel fencing. Flutter Tunnel will basically rent 200 lengths of 7/8" x 25' sucker rod, purchasing the batch and then paying a restock fee after Burning Man concludes.

SunNight Solar SN-2

Picture
The latest model of solar powered flashlight from SunNight Solar, the SN-2 is redesigned with numerous improvements.

  • In the developing world, this light will save users money presently spent on kerosene, reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere, reduce carbon particulate inhalation and fire risk, aide in education, security, safety and dramatically improve people’s overall quality of life.
  • Batteries charge in 8 to 10 hours of full sunlight
  • Batteries are air-cooled for better operation in very hot conditions.
  • Wide beam "RoomLight" and bright narrow beam "TaskLight" mode, with high, medium and low intensity settings.
  • "Glow ring" - easy to find in the dark.
  • Single piece case - rugged, requiring no screws to hold the body together
  • Water resistant
  • "Turn off in sun" and "turn off when nearly flat" features allows use in pathlight or night light mode. Small battery reserve allows auto turn on again with same setting next evening.
  • Carabiner clip for one handed attachment to backpack, ropes, branches etc.

Sequin Scrap

Picture
Sequins are the small shiny dots used in various textiles. Sequins are usually round, varying in size from 1 mm to 40 mm 'pailettes'. As shiny and neato as sequins are, the waste produced in manufacturing is astounding. Only one size of sequin waste, usually called 'sequin honeycomb' is marketed as craft ribbon for decorative wrapping etc.

Flutter Tunnel will utilize 40 mm silver pailette sequin scrap to create a visual glitter from afar, and astounding visual effects while inside Flutter Tunnel during a breeze or heavy wind. The shinyness of the material is an asset during the night, as it will amplify the effectivenes of the SunNight Solar flashlights, creating flickering and spiderwebby light patterns.
